Following on from the first article on this project, the idea … what followed was beyond what I expected.
Many times I have met people, NGOs and the sort from many islands to whom I had proposed this idea of a healthy island, but for years most people never followed up on it. It just went under the carpet. I can understand, because the task is daunting. What had to be said was not too appealing to our material minds. Yet, this was at least different. I got a follow up call!
Ukulhas Hope NGO contacted me back and they expressed their keenness to try this project. They informed me that they have consulted with the island council and other bodies within the island and everyone seems to be willing to work this out. Hence, they requested me to meet with the council.
On 24 September 2022, an online meeting was called with the Council and Ukulhas Hope and we discussed a way forward. The main aim was to figure out ways to engage the public and empower them to take up the cause. I explained the concepts that I would like to include and that the actions should be sought with public consultations. I was amazed with the enthusiasm of the council and members of Ukulhas Hope to embark on this difficult endeavor. Yet, it was gratifying to know that people of an island are willing to listen and work on an idea towards the betterment of society.
So then, we agreed to pursue the cause and take that first step. Engage the public.
To do this, we decided to call for a workshop, present the concept to the participants and work out strategies from within the public so that it will be owned by them. They will become the champions of their own cause.
With a lot of hope and happiness, I was thrilled to give my contribution. What would happen when we have a workshop is to be known, and how well the public would buy into this was always a question. Specially at a time when most people are in a laidback lifestyle where most things are depended on state provisions.
We start, all optimistic for the next step of the endeavor.
